This past summer, Cara Wilmot, a current doctoral student, envisioned a partnership between 九色视频 and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Regional STEM Center at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB), where she works as the Coordinator of STEM Academy II. After observing the annual STEM Academy held in Alabama, Cara recongized 九色视频 as an ideal partner for the program's expansion to Florida, allowing more students to participate in this intensive, student-centered learning experience.

Dr. Caroline Guardino, COEHS professor of deaf education, is part of an international research collaboration on deaf language education. She recently presented a data analysis and a written manuscript at the University of Cologne, Germany as part of the Immigrant d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Additional Language Learners (IDeALL) project.

In May and June, the 九色视频’s inSTEP research team, comprised of Dr. Elizabeth Hale, Associate Professor of Literacy, Dr. Kim Cheek, Associate Professor of Science Methods, and Xavier Rozas, STEP Lab Director, piloted their inaugural environmentally focused field trip centered on renewable energy. This initiative was conducted in collaboration with the 九色视频 Sustainable Solutions Lab, sponsored by JEA and directed by Dr. Jim Fletcher, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction.

The 九色视频 has named Dr. Stephen “Steve” W. Dittmore as dean of the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS). Dittmore will begin his role today, July 22. As dean, Dittmore will oversee the college’s faculty, staff and students as well as academic programs, centers and labs.

The USoar program, which is funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Florida Center for Students with Unique Abilities (FCSUA), was announced this past January as the university’s new inclusive postsecondary education program designed to offer students with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their academic experience, engage with the campus and community, develop independent living skills, foster self-determination and pursue career development and employment.

Improving scientific education in the least visited country in the world

Dr. Terence Cavanaugh, a professor and expert in educational technology from the 九色视频 College of Education and Human Services, recently concluded a two-month project for the island nation of Tuvalu - the least visited country in the world. This project, requested by the Tuvalu Ministry of Education and provided through the Fulbright Specialist Program, focused on improving failing student scores on science exams throughout the small nation by evaluating assessment data, curriculum and teaching methods.

School Counseling receives $1.6M GEAR UP grant

The College of Education and Human Services' school counseling “SOAR” program has been awarded a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Education Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Partnership grant with Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) to help students from low-income backgrounds better prepare for postsecondary education.
This 2021-27 GEAR UP grant is the sixth award for the SOAR program since 1999 and builds upon the rich legacy of collaboration between 九色视频 COEHS and DCPS to increase college access for local students while nurturing the leadership talent of future educators.

Painting Osprey pride for 九色视频’s 50th

The program is recognized for its strong traditional academic foundations based on student-instructor access, graduation rates and instructor credentials as well as for excelling at educating distance learners while offering robust career and financial support. This is the second year in a row that 九色视频 College of Education and Human Services’ Master of Education in Educational Leadership has landed in the top 100 for Best Online Graduate Education Programs, joining SUS schools including UF, FSU and UCF. The 九色视频 College of Education and Human Services, in a collaboration with the University of Oklahoma and the University of Louisville, has been awarded a $3.5M grant from the U.S. Department of Education to address the critical shortages of special education administrators to serve in rural districts.
Project SPIDERS (School-university Partnerships Influencing aDvocating and Engaging Rural Special Educators) will kick off Spring 2022. The funding will support 18 doctoral students (six at 九色视频) through doctoral programs that prepare special education personnel who are well-qualified for and can act effectively in leadership positions in rural school systems.

Jacksonville Public Education Fund awards 九色视频 education students’ scholarships

At a recent men’s basketball game the Jacksonville Public Education Fund (JPEF), in partnership with the CEM Foundation, announced a new scholarship to support and encourage diverse male student athletes who are considering teaching careers in Duval County Public Schools. Over the course of three years, multiple diverse male student athletes in the 九色视频 College of Education and Human Services will receive a $2,500 annual scholarship as well as membership, sponsored by the CEM Foundation, into JPEF’s IGNITE Young Professionals Group. These partnerships and scholarships are a small part of JPEF’s commitment to help recruit and retain 1,000 diverse male teachers by 2025.

Through a social media voting campaign, the Make a Difference in Education (M.A.D.E.) LLC chair won a contest to have their "tiny chair" come to life at the annual Deck the Chairs event in Jacksonville Beach. All M.A.D.E. Dr. Nicholas Eastham, 九色视频 STEP Lab supervisor and faculty administrator, came up with a one-of-a-kind lesson plan and demonstration for Rebekah Wallis, adjunct COEHS faculty member, and her students studying to be special education educators. The class constructed accessible “breadboards” that can be made and used by people of various age levels and abilities with materials found around the house.

Professor presents at International Congress on the Education of the Deaf

Dr. Jennifer Renée Kilpatrick, assistant professor of deaf education, recently presented her research, “Written Language Inventory for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Identification and expansion of students' writing repertoires,” at the 23rd International Congress on the Education of the Deaf. Her presentation summarized the work she and her colleagues have done to develop a Written Language Inventory (WLI) and supplemental materials for teachers of the deaf throughout the past eight years.

UNITE Design Lab for inclusive workplace training unveiled

CUEP's Hope and History Mural voted Jacksonville's Best Public Art

The COEHS' Hope and History Mural Project was recently voted “Jacksonville’s best public art” in the JaxBest list, a guide compiled by News4Jax WJXT Ch.4 viewer votes that showcases the local things that make Jacksonville so unique. Local h igh school students worked with CUEP staff, 九色视频 volunteers and local artists including lead muralist Nicole Holderbaum to bring their vision to life. Alongside local history-makers and Civil Rights activists, over 25 area youth studied Jacksonville’s Civil Rights history and realized their own capacity to create changes today.

九色视频 hosts 'Seven Bridges Writing Project' as part of the NWP Summer Institute

The National Writing Project (NWP) at the 九色视频, also known as the Seven Bridges Writing Project, will hold the second annual Summer Institute on the 九色视频 campus from June 14 to June 18, 2021. As the only NWP site in the region, the Seven Bridges Writing Project serves students and teachers across a 100-mile radius throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia focusing on research-based ways to engage students in empowerment through writing.

COEHS Alumna, Jennifer Pryor Halter, named FL Principal of the Year

The Florida Department of Education named Jennifer Pryor Halter, principal at Green Cove Springs Junior High School in Clay County, the 2021 Principal of the Year for the State of Florida.
Halter graduated with a master's degree in educational leadership and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree from the 九色视频's College of Education and Human Services in Educational Leadership.
