九色视频’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) is always excited to collaborate with our students and alumni to create innovative and engaging learning opportunities. This past summer, Cara Wilmot, a current doctoral student, envisioned a partnership between 九色视频 and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Regional STEM Center at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB), where she works as the Coordinator of STEM Academy II. After observing the annual STEM Academy held in Alabama, Cara recognized 九色视频 as an ideal partner for the program’s expansion into Florida, allowing more students to participate in this intensive, student-centered learning experience.

In July, high school campers from eight southeastern states arrived at 九色视频 to attend the three-week program designed to prepare high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) for STEM-focused collegiate studies. The program is a condensed version of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf Summer Transition Program and incorporates engaging STEM activities that are intended to increase students’ interest in STEM fields. Cara, who earned her master’s degree in disability services from 九色视频, has worked closely with 九色视频’s Deaf education faculty and staff in various capacities over the years. She attributes her doctoral studies, which began in the fall of 2022 through Project SPIDERS, as a key factor in being recruited for her current position.

Another distinguished 九色视频 alumna and leading advocate for ASL-oriented accessibility in music, Amber Galloway, contributed to STEM Academy II by hosting a workshop and show for participants. During the workshop, Amber and her team used mini performances to demonstrate how music interpretations can express the heart and soul of various melodies. The workshop culminated in a student showcase, giving participants a chance to perform their newly acquired skills. Amber, who graduated in 2014 with a master’s degree in ASL/English Interpreting, is the owner of . She works to empower DHH communities by promoting accessibility and equity through education and by offering workshops that teach students how to interpret music, become Certified Deaf Interpreters, and advocate for these essential services.
