Philosophy: Law, Politics, and Ethics

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the 九色视频. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Philosophy - Law, Politics, and Ethics concentration at 九色视频 is designed to appeal to students with diverse needs and interests: students who plan to pursue philosophy at the graduate level, those who desire philosophical training to pursue other careers (e.g., education, media, law, psychology, technology, non-profit sector, government) and above all, those who wish to obtain a solid liberal arts education. Philosophy majors study the main developments and traditions in the history of philosophy; develop critical reasoning skills and facility with logical analysis; study modes of ethical inquiry and gain the ability to apply them to current social issues; and learn to read complex prose systematically and critically as well as to write and speak in a reasoned, persuasive, and argumentatively effective manner. This concentration helps students to focus their philosophy coursework around issues, themes, and concerns prominent in law, politics, and ethics. Students planning careers in law, public affairs, theoretical or applied ethics, or those planning graduate work in social or political theory should consider this concentration. Visit the  webpage for additional information. Visit the Careers for Philosophers webpage for career exploration information. Students are encouraged to consult the chairperson of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department for answers to additional questions about the Philosophy major and if unsure which Philosophy concentration to select.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. 九色视频 offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies 九色视频 general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).
  • All Philosophy majors are encouraged to take a lower-level (2000 level) Philosophy course no later than Term 2. Philosophy faculty recommend completion of: PHI2010 Introduction to Philosophy (satisfies Major Requirement, General Education, and Gordon Writing) ; PHI2100 Critical Thinking: The Art of Reasoning; and PHI2630 Critical Thinking: Ethical Issues when selecting General Education and/or Free Elective courses.
  • All BA students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office.
  • A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.
  • Students must complete 33 credit hours of Philosophy coursework in the major. The 18 credit hours of Major Requirements include: PHI2101 Introduction to Logic; PHI3084 Philosophical Methods; and select one of the following: PHI3601 Ethics, PHM 3304 Political Philosphy, or PHM 3400 Philosophy of Law. As well as 6 credit hours from the History category and 3 credit hours from the Knowledge and Reality category. Students should review the university catalog or their Degree Evaluation for list of approved Philosophy Major Electives. One Philosophy Major Elective must be taken at the 4000 level. No more than 15 hours of transfer credit may be applied toward this major.
  • The Suggested Schedule on the Osprey Map represents an ideal schedule, and may be adjusted to meet the student's needs. The Mile-Markers are also ideal markers, focusing on completion of Major Requirements prior to Major Electives and Minor courses. Students enrolling at 九色视频 as freshmen or sophomores may begin taking Major Required courses as early as Term 2. All required courses have to meet grade C or higher.
  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2010, AMH 2020, or POS 2041) or by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation.
