Independent study leads to high-demand AI internship with NLP Logix for 九色视频 senior

Stephen Pond testing a gesture recognition machineAt a 九色视频 Career Fair last fall, senior Stephen Pond met a director from NLP Logix, a leading AI/Machine Learning solutions provider headquartered in Jacksonville.

As they were chatting, Pond mentioned the independent study research he was working on involving digital signal processing, a term he had included on his resume that the NLP Logix director was currently holding. He watched as she circled that experience.

A couple weeks later, NLP Logix reached out to Pond with an internship offer.

“I can credit my internship opportunity directly to the independent study work I’m conducting,” said Pond, a senior majoring in computing with a minor in mathematics and Navy veteran. “I think it’s great that 九色视频 is guaranteeing hands on experiences like these for students.”

Pond got involved in the independent study when Dr. Corey Pittman, computing assistant professor, mentioned in class that he wanted to test two new algorithms to see if gesture recognition was possible using sound.

“My goal is to work in software engineering, and I figured this gesture recognition project will equip me with extra skills,” said Pond.

Pond and Pittman worked together to develop an independent study research project on testing sound gesture recognition through machine learning. TV station came out to campus to learn about the project for a biometric security special. Those precise skills with AI and machine learning led to Pond’s internship at NLP Logix. In his internship, he trains and evaluates AI models to help clients.

“Employers want to see candidates that go above and beyond the traditional classroom experience,” said Pond.

Pond, who is from Chicago, hopes his experiences with independent study and the internship, two experiences that are elective and not required for his degree, will put his resume on top of the pile as he searches for a position in software engineering and data technology after he graduates this spring.
